On Friday, President Joe Biden signed a presidential order aimed at protecting the right to free abortion in the country. The order came after HD’s historic decision to tear up “Roe against Wade”, a cornerstone of American free abortion law, earlier in June. Through the order, Biden commissioned, among other things, the Ministry of Health to protect the right to abortion pills and contraceptives.
Now the organization Women’s March strikes back and says that the presidential order is far from sufficient.
– Waiting for two weeks to give a speech and sign a piece of paper is not enough, says CEO Rachel O’Leary in a press release.
“Targeted Civil Disobedience”
According to the organization, the protest will not take the same form as a regular mass demonstration. Instead, Saturday’s event is called “targeted civil disobedience.” It is also stated that no special actions will be taken to avoid arrests during Saturday’s demonstration.
According to SVT’s foreign reporter Carl Fridh Kleberg who is on site at the White House, several protesters have already gathered at the presidential residence and another 1000 demonstrators gathered earlier in a nearby park and are on their way to the site.
– Many might have expected a higher participation, but those who are present express very upset feelings that they have torn up “Roe against Wade” and a disappointment towards Biden’s administration, he says.
