Women United donates $20K for trauma support

Women United, a philanthropic network within United Way, announced a $20,000 donation to the trauma support program at the Chatham-Kent Women’s Center’s inaugural event, Shine the Light.

The funding will provide essential services for women and children affected by intimate partner violence, human trafficking and sexual assault, a release said.

The grant will facilitate the program in collaboration with the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, Family Service Kent and the women’s center.

“We are honored to support the expansion of this vital trauma support program for Chatham-Kent,” said Lorraine Goddard, chief executive of United Way Windsor-Essex Chatham-Kent.

“With this donation, we hope to raise awareness for the Chatham-Kent trauma support program, empowering women and children affected by intimate partner violence,” she said. “Together, we can create a safer, more supportive community where survivors can find hope and the resources they need to rebuild.”

The program offers comprehensive services that address the unique needs of women and children facing these challenges. The funding will ensure these programs continue to grow and reach more people.

“The Shine the Light event serves as a crucial platform to illuminate the heartbreaking realities faced by women and children fleeing intimate partner violence, sexual assault and human trafficking,” said Karen Hunter, executive director of Chatham-Kent Women’s Centre.

“We are honored to create a space where personal stories of courage and resilience are shared, empowering women and children to find safety, healing, and look towards a brighter future.”

The event featured guest speaker Brandi Leifso, a survivor of intimate partner violence, who inspired attendees with her story of resilience and empowerment. She highlighted the importance of community support, and the strength found in shared journeys.
