Women should have the right to choose Caesarean section

More and more women are choosing Caesarean sections • Experts warn of life -threatening complications

At the Moderates Sweden’s days in Karlstad, the moderate women proposed that all women should be entitled to Caesarean section, regardless of medical reasons.
Chairman Josefin Malmqvist believes that the fear of childbirth is a reality for many women and that today’s conversation about vaginal delivery is not always enough.
– We think that the woman’s right to make the decision weighs the heaviest, and we want it to be ensured, she says in after five.

The statistics show that Caesarean sections are becoming more and more common in Sweden. In 1973, 5 % of children were born through Caesarean section, while the figure in 2023 had increased to 19.5 %. At the same time, experts warn of the risks.

Sofia Brismar Wendel, childbirth physician and associate professor, points out that Caesarean section often leads to future caesarean sections, which can cause serious complications that can be life -threatening.

– It’s not about economics or ideology, but about reducing the risks in the long term, she says.

Caesarean section in Sweden – a growing trend

The moderate women highlight the major differences between regions in access to caesarean sections.

– We do not know how many women want to give birth through Caesarean section but are denied. It should not be decided by where you live, says Malmqvist.

A report from the state’s preparation for medical and social evaluation (SBU) shows that Caesarean section can cost up to SEK 36,000 more than a vaginal delivery. However, the moderate women believe that economic calculations lack important perspectives, such as mental costs in childbirth trauma.

– Sick leave and late complications must be included. Vaginal births can also cause incontinence and appearance that requires surgery later in life, says Malmqvist.

Focus on women’s health

In addition to the Caesarean section discussion, the moderate women want to see more reforms for women’s health. They point out that only 1 % of the world’s medical research focuses on women’s diseases and that Sweden needs to invest more in gynecology and aftercare.

– In France, women receive physical therapy for pelvic floor after childbirth. We need similar solutions in Sweden, says Malmqvist, emphasizing that women’s health must be prioritized.

The Moderates have already implemented some reforms, but Malmqvist believes that more must be done.

– Sweden is one of the world’s most equal countries, but in women’s health we have much to do.
