Women on Wilson (WOW) came to fruition in Andrews Crossing, a HayHoe subdivision, and its purpose is to make connections, share information and resources, and give back to the community. The group currently has about 33 members.

They first gathered in a nearby park to get acquainted and determine goals, deciding their priorities would be connectivity, providing educational components, and giving back to the community.

Over time, friendships blossomed, and they now have a variety of subgroups such as golf, playing cards, crafts, a book club, outings and tours, cookie exchanges, and many other pop-up events.

Each year, the group selects charities to support and the focus on ‘giving back’ has brought them even closer together. In its four years WOW has donated to the Tillsonburg branch of the Oxford County Library, Salvation Army – Tillsonburg, DASO, an animal shelter, and the Canadian Cancer Society.

They recently held an ‘Art in the Hood’ fundraiser for the Helping Hand Food Bank with group members and their families sharing their creative talents as a means of inspiring others in the community and raising funds for their cause. Exhibitors showcased their creations in their driveways on June 20, donated items for a silent auction, and those with culinary talent contributed to the bake sale. The first Art in the Hood was open exclusively to members, their families, friends, and neighbors, and it resulted in a donation of $1,500 to the food bank.

Women on Wilson hopes to inspire other neighbourhoods to organise similar initiatives, gathering in a spirit of togetherness giving back to the community.
