Woman with handgun bites officer during arrest: Police

A report of a woman in possession of a handgun Tuesday afternoon prompted a hold-and-secure at two Brantford schools.

Brantford Police said they received a 911 call at about 3:10 pm Tuesday about a single-vehicle collision on Glenwood Drive near Kiwanis Way.

A woman in possession of a handgun was seen fleeing the area on foot, heading towards the No Frills plaza, police said in a press release issued mid-afternoon Wednesday.

Pauline Johnson Collegiate and Major Ballachey School on Rawdon Street were placed in a temporary lockdown while officers searched the vicinity.

A suspect was located and taken into custody inside a fast-food restaurant at Dalhousie and Stanley streets.

An officer was assaulted and bitten during the arrest, said police. The suspect, who police said was found to be in possession of a BB gun, was wanted on outstanding warrants and in violation of a probation order.

The accused was taken to hospital for medical treatment of suspected drug use, while the officer was treated for sustained injuries.

A 39-year-old Brantford woman has been charged with assaulting a peace officer, possession of firearm or weapon, and non-compliance of a probation order.

She has been held for lease.

Impaired driving charge

A traffic complaint reported to County of Brant OPP resulted in impaired driving charges for a Hamilton driver.

A citizen reported the driving behavior of a vehicle traveling on Highway 403 at about 12:30 am on Wednesday, December 4.

Officers located and stopped the vehicle, took the driver into custody and transported them to the Hamilton Police Services for testing.

A 56-year-old Hamilton driver has been charged with operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, and operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).

Police urge motorists to call 9-1-1 immediately if they see a suspected impaired driver.
