A woman from the village of Colti in Romania found a stone in a stream bed that she then used as a door stopper for years.
Only after her death was the million dollar discovery made: it was one of the largest ambers ever – worth around 11 million kroner, writes German Photo referring to El Pais.
If the elderly woman from Colti in Romania had only known what kind of stone she had been using as a doorstop for years.
Only after her death in 1991 did the woman’s relatives discover its true value, when they had the red-shining stone examined by experts. The around 3.5 kilo heavy stone turned out to be one of the largest amber stones ever and is between 38 and 70 million years old. The value is estimated at one million euros, which is around SEK 11 million, writes Photo.
Got burglarized
Since the 1920s, amber has been mined near the village of Colti on the Buzău River, where the stones, like the lady’s stone, have a characteristic red color.
The woman had found the stone in a nearby stream bed and taken it home where she used it as a door stopper – not knowing what treasure she had found. Over the years, the woman was also burglarized where the thieves, who were looking for valuables, left the stone.
After the unique discovery, the Romanian state bought the amber from the woman’s family and now it can be seen in a museum in the city of Buzău.
