A woman with diabetes was close to suffocating after putting food down her throat during a seizure probably caused by too much insulin via a semi-automatic pump, writes Läkartidningen.
The woman received the pump in mid-December and in the incident, the pump system is suspected of having registered incorrect blood sugar values, which the pump then acted on and gave too much insulin.
The incident is reported to the Medical Products Agency by the woman’s caregiver. In the report, it is stated that the woman survived thanks to relatives who were there and that it is not certain that she would have survived if she had been alone.
The report also states that the woman must have been seriously affected by the incident for a day afterwards with, among other things, difficulties with motor skills, dizziness, fatigue and a sluggishness in thinking as well as slurred speech, writes Läkartidningen.
In total, the woman must have suffered three serious episodes due to the insulin pump.
