It is the second time wolf hybrids have been discovered in Sweden. The first time was in 2017 when a litter was born in Södermanland after mating between a dog and a wolf.
The difference this time is that it is an immigrant wolf hybrid from Finland or Russia.
The hybrid should be killed in order to preserve a genetically pure wolf tribe, believes Alexander Winiger, predator officer at the County Administrative Board in Norrbotten.
“The Svartberg hybrid should be killed as much as possible to preserve a genetically pure wolf strain, while the Tuoljeträsk wolf could add valuable new genes to the Scandinavian wolf population, provided it migrates south,” he says.
It has caused great damage to the reindeer industry, but is currently no longer in the area.
