“He was a very amiable man,” says Van Leeuwen. “He also had a sharp sense of humor. Quite dry, not everyone gets that. I always thought it was hilarious.” As chairman, he was greatly appreciated by his fellow party members. “He always knew how to say it politely if something was going on. If there were problems, he knew how to get to the heart of the matter in just a few words.” Lenie is going to miss him. “He lives around the corner from me and every time he cycled or walked by, he would look in and wave.”
