Today, exactly 650 years ago, Woerden received city rights. On March 12, 1372 Woerden received these rights from Duke Albrecht of Holland. And the reason they got those rights was because Woerden resisted so well against the bishop of Utrecht. Can we imagine anything more now, because Woerden is now in the Province of Utrecht, but until 1989 – that was only 33 years ago! – Woerden has always belonged to South(elijk) Holland. And 650 years ago they were even rewarded with city rights for this.
