The investigation was ongoing as of Monday, police said, after the discovery on Saturday. The identity of the deceased had not yet been determined, police said.

The investigation is being conducted with the assistance of the Elgin OPP crime unit, the Office of the Chief Coroner, and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, police said, adding there is no threat to public safety connected to the case.

On Sunday, Port Bruce resident Will Mepsted spoke with The Free Press about the aftermath of the body’s discovery one day prior. He remembered seeing cruisers at Waneeta Beach and he told a woman he knows told him she discovered the body while walking her dog along the water.

The discovery happened at about 11 am on Saturday, he said.

“Within an hour there were many more police officers here. Detectives and all that,” Mepsted said.

Police say more information will be made public once it becomes available.
