“There are good movies, there are bad movies and then there are good bad movies” – this is how the Hollywood Reporter describes Flash Gordon by director Mike Hodges. In fact, the sci-fi classic enjoys one real cult status. Oliver Kalkhofe and Peter Rütten also opened their series last year with the comic film adaptation, which appeared in 1980 KulFaz – the most iconic films of all time.

Musically, Flash Gordon is nothing but cult, as the soundtrack comes from the legendary band Queen. At the December 7th Flash Gordon is released in a new version for home cinema.

Flash Gordon: Star Wars almost didn’t exist

Producer Dino de Laurentiis had been interested in a comic book adaptation of Flash Gordon since the 1960s secured the rights. But the wheels of the film industry are known to grind slowly and so it took de Laurentiis until he found a director and a suitable script for his project.

In the meantime George Lucas stood at the door and tried to buy the film rights from de Laurentiis in the 70s, but the Italian producer wouldn’t let them go. Luckily, George Lucas dedicated himself to his Plan B and developed one of them largest film series in film history: Star Wars (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Nomination for the Golden Raspberry

Flash Gordon received multiple nominations for the British Academy Film Award and the Saturn Award. The latter is mainly given to science fiction, fantasy and horror films. The nomination for Sam J. Jones is less laudable worst leading actor for the Golden Raspberry. However, they have already received the negative price some Oscar winnersincluding Sandra Bullock, Halle Berry, Ben Affleck, Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, Kevin Costner and Liza Minelli.

    When planet Earth is attacked, there is only one person who can save the world: football player and superhero Flash Gordon (Sam J. Jones). He receives support from the tour guide Dale Arden (Melody Anderson) and the scientist Dr. Zarkov (Topol). Together, the team travels to the planet Mongo in a rocket to stop the ruthless Emperor Ming (Max von Sydow).
