Arsenal claimed their third straight win in the English Premier League after defeating fellow London side Brentford 3-1 in the only Premier League game on New Year’s Day. The victory narrowed the gap between Arsenal, who came second in the series, to the top team Liverpool to six points. Of course, Arsenal has one more game to play.
The home team Brentford, which is in the middle of the league table, took the lead in the match with its first goal By Bryan Mbeumon with a goal in the 13th minute, but Gabriel Jesus struck a quarter of an hour later to make it 1-1 at the break. Arsenal then stormed to victory with two quick goals in the early stages of the second half. It struck first Mikel Merinoand nailed the game-sealing hit Gabriel Martinelli.
– This was a big win. Brentford is a good team and played well at home. When you concede a goal at the start, it’s a real mountain to climb, but we kept our composure. We started the second half really well and were clinical in the box, Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta comment for the BBC.
Arsenal next face Brighton on Saturday, while Liverpool host relegated Manchester United on Sunday.
