With Back in Action, Netflix has landed another big hit – at least in terms of the weekend’s streaming charts. Right from the start, the action comedy starring Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx was at the top of the top 10 most popular films on Netflix. But what about part 2?
Not only in view of its success, the question arises as to whether Back in Action will be continued with another film on Netflix. The ending of the film also leaves fans speculating about how the story could continue. Before you continue reading, let me make a point here Spoiler warning pronounced.
Will there be part 2 of Back in Action on Netflix?
The current status is as follows: Netflix has a sequel to Back in Action no official green light yet given. However, there are several things that suggest that the streaming service wants to turn the action comedy into a film series. The most obvious clue occurs at the end of the film.
The ending of Back in Action explained:
At the end of Back in Action, Emily (Diaz) tells fellow MI6 agent Baron (Andrew Scott) that she and her husband Matt (Foxx) will no longer return to active duty with the CIA. Baron then replies that villain Chuck (Kyle Chandler)’s body was never found and he needs her help.
Then comes the teaser for part 2. Baron wants Emily to recruit a member of her family to finally stop Chuck. The twist: Emily thinks that Baron means her mother Ginny (Glenn Close), an MI6 veteran. However, Baron replies that it’s not about her mother, but about her father.
Who is Emily’s father in Back in Action 2?
That will be the big question of the sequel. Throughout the entire film, it is kept secret that Emily also has a father who is involved in spy business somewhere in the history of the world. The existence of his wife’s father comes as a surprise even to Matt. Netflix deliberately uses the moment as a potential preview.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, director Seth Gordon teases:
There is an idea who the father could be and what the story is about [in Back in Action 2] could rotate.
But who plays the mysterious father? Where does he comes from? What is its origin story? Gordon formulates a few vague outlooks:
I would assume that [Ginny] met him through work. It wouldn’t be bad if [der Schauspieler des Vaters] would also be British. You would also have to be able to believe that he can handle a weapon. So there are certain people you could consider for this role. We definitely have some creative thoughts. How likely is Part 2 of Back in Action?
Back in Action fits the profile of other blockbusters that Netflix has released in recent years in the hope that they will start a new film series. From 6 Underground to Red Notice to The Gray Man: big budgets meet big names. This is also the case with Back in Action.
There is, however, a problem: Despite various number 1 placements and obvious plans (an entire action universe was even planned for The Gray Man), Netflix has not continued any of these films to date. We’ll be curious to see whether work on Part 2 will get underway more quickly at Back in Action.
