With the success of the Nintendo Switch, the handheld game console market is attracting more and more players. Like Ayaneo with its future Next 2, a model with enticing features, with a Ryzen 7000 and a dedicated GPU.

Long neglected by manufacturers, the portable game console really seems to be making a comeback thanks to the success of the essential Switch, the undisputed queen of the category. After Valve and its famous Steam Deck, Logitech in turn rushed into the niche market with its amazing G Cloud, followed by Razer with its promising Edge, which seems to have some under the hood. It’s the turn of the Ayaneo brand, which sells consoles of the same name, to come back to the fore with a brand new portable console, unveiled through a rather mysterious tweet: the Ayaneo Next 2. Already announced in June 2022, it remains very mysterious for the moment.

Ayaneo Next 2: a Ryzen 7000 processor and a dedicated graphics circuit

Ayaneo announces the release of two consoles, the Next 2 and the Kun, during 2023. We don’t really know anything about the latter, except that it is a “new series of notebooks taking up the pioneering spirit of the Next 2” and that we should know more in the coming weeks. For the Next 2 precisely, the manufacturer announces that it will run on Windows, and that it will be equipped with an 8-inch screen and a next-gen processor of the 7000 series. Suffice to say that the indication is very vague, since the Ryzen 7000 series is a very large family. The “next-gen” designation may however make us lean towards a Zen4, whose architecture has been revised Ayaneo also indicates that the portable console will integrate a “new dedicated GPU“. Here again, the formulation questions, and we can logically think of the mobile Radeon RX 7000s, which were unveiled by AMD during CES 2023, but again, it is impossible to know which one exactly. Also arises, with such CPU and GPU, the question of cooling and autonomy Of course, the manufacturer has not yet given a price, but the first edition of the Aya Neo Next is relatively expensive – more than 1,000 euros! that this Aya Neo Next 2 with a dedicated graphics circuit may cost a kidney…

The proliferation of announcements of portable consoles shows that there is a real trend. We can thank the success of Nintendo and the popularization of cloud gaming for this! On the other hand, the price tends to put off those who would like to convert to it. The reference remains the Steam Deck, which ranges from 419 to 679 euros depending on the model – almost the price of a PS5! Logitech’s G-Cloud is much more affordable, at $350, but you absolutely must have a Wi-Fi connection to be able to play cloud gaming – like the Steam Deck –, which somewhat limits its interest. There remains the Razer Edge which seems to be the most promising, at 399 dollars in the Wi-Fi version, but the 5G version is only available in the United States for the moment, via a dedicated operator. With its astronomical price, Ayaneo consoles are really in a separate category, which is more like a mini PC. A case to watch closely.
