One of the weapons that Monster Hunter Wilds will have when it releases on Steam and PS5 is the Energy Blade: It combines the defensive capabilities of a shield with the offensive power of a battle axe.
What game is this about? Monster Hunter Wilds is the latest installment in the popular Monster Hunter series, which has been around since 2004. The action RPG, which is scheduled to be released on Steam, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2025, is being developed by Capcom.
Maybe we’ll even be able to play Monster Hunter Wilds in the spring. After all, Capcom has already started presenting the available weapon types.
You can watch the official trailer for the Energy Blade here:
What can the energy blade do? In sword mode, the energy blade is very reminiscent of sword & shield: you have a shield for defense and a sword for attack. In this mode, you are nimble and can defend yourself well, but you deal relatively little damage.
By successfully hitting in sword mode, you collect energy that you can use to gradually fill individual vials. These are displayed as five vials in the HUD. When they light up, you can transfer the energy into the vials and then use them in axe mode.
In axe mode, you have to do without your shield, but you also do significantly more damage. This can be increased even further by suddenly discharging the energy collected in the vials.
Ideally, you will want to switch between the two modes regularly to get the absolute maximum out of the weapon. If the monster is fixated on you and is constantly raining down attacks on you, you are better off in sword mode. However, note that in this mode – unlike sword & shield – you cannot use items.
The energy blade is not a good recommendation for new hunters due to its high level of complexity. Fortunately, Monster Hunter Wilds will also provide you with many other weapons at release that should make getting started much easier.
