With its latest update, Gemini fulfills its role as an AI assistant a little more by automatically launching directions for a trip on Google Maps with voice commands. No need to use your hands anymore!

In the race for artificial intelligence, Google intends to integrate Gemini into all of its tools and services, whether on mobile, on connected objects or even online. Its AI, which is based on Gemini Pro, one of the company’s most powerful large language models (LLM), is designed to help users in their daily lives, whether it is writing text, planning events, generating images, summarize documents, write emails or simply save time browsing. HAS Ultimately, Gemini should even replace Google Assistant. Also, the Mountain View firm is gradually extending its use to some of its services, such as Google Messages, where certain beta testers can now communicate directly with the AI (see our article). With its latest update, Gemini can now automatically launch Google Maps navigation when asked for directions, to make hands-free navigation more intuitive and faster.

Google Maps with Gemini: all with voice commands

Until now, when we asked Gemini to take us to a location, it displayed the route, but then we had to press to launch navigation and be redirected to Google Maps. It was only there that we could truly begin our journey. Suffice to say that having to use our hands while using voice mode is not very practical… With the update, Gemini automatically switches us to the mapping service, without us having to perform any manipulation, as noted 9to5google. A change highlighted in the latest release note for the app on the Play Store: “We’ve updated voice commands to include auto-submit. No more pressing the ‘send’ button”. This improvement marks a step toward more natural interaction with the future assistant, especially for those who rely on voice commands while on the go.

The other new thing is being able to use our voice to set reminders and calendar entries. However, this option is only accessible to users who have activated the Workspace extension in the Gemini application settings. AI still has a way to go to truly replace Google Assistant, but it’s getting there little by little. Note, however, that while the application is already available in 150 countries, it is not yet available here.
