With Android 15, many cell phones will receive an important feature that could significantly extend the life of your phone. MeinMMO explains what’s behind it and why iPhones have supported the feature for a long time.
Which feature comes with Android 15? According to reports, Android will get a new feature that will allow users to manually set a battery charge limit of 80%. The feature is said to be called “Charge Optimization”.
Once the Charging Optimization feature is enabled, users will have the option to choose between Adaptive Charging mode and the new 80% Limit mode.
When will the feature be available? With the update to Android 15, Google’s Pixel models will be the first phones to receive the feature. An exact date is not yet known.
Apple has been offering charging functionality since iOS 13
What does this have to do with Apple? Apple has been offering so-called “optimized charging” on its iPhone since version iOS 13. iOS 13 was officially released on September 19, 2019, and that was 5 years ago now. Every reasonably modern iPhone therefore has this function. The next version, iOS 18, will be released in 2024 with many new features.
Apple also offers an additional function that “learns” how you use your iPhone. Your phone will only be charged to over 80% when you really need the capacity. You won’t find a function like this on Android (yet).
On the iPhone, you can also configure the maximum percentage of charge your phone should have. Here you can set the limit to 80%, 85%, 90%, or 95%.
Why is such a battery function important? The battery in a cell phone is the component that usually wears out the fastest because it is constantly used. Experts generally recommend not charging the battery to more than 80%.
