Witcher 3 director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz left CDPR to establish his own studio, Rebel Wolves, for The Blood of Dawnwalker.
Witcher 3‘s legendary director, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, left CD Projekt Red and founded his own studio, Rebel Wolves. Tomaszkiewicz announced that he decided to leave with the vision of developing new projects. Their first project, an open-world vampire RPG The Blood of Dawnwalkerwas started with the aim of gaining creative freedom with a smaller team. According to Tomaszkiewicz, the strict RPG rules imposed by major studios can be relaxed in an indie environment, paving the way for more innovative projects.
Reason for Leaving Witcher 3 and New Vision
Tomaszkiewicz stated that after a great success like Witcher 3, he wanted to create more original and risky projects. Referring to the difficulty of realizing such projects in a giant company like CDPR, Tomaszkiewicz said, “If we wanted to implement our crazy ideas, we had to establish our own studio.” Stating that large companies are reluctant to invest in projects outside their existing intellectual property (IP), Tomaszkiewicz chose to take a more innovative approach with Rebel Wolves.
Rebel Wolves’ first project, The Blood of Dawnwalker, tells the story of a young man who transforms into Dawnwalker, a hybrid being of human and vampire. The game, which draws attention with its dark atmosphere and scary vampire designs, is inspired by Tomaszkiewicz’s previous experiences. The creative team aims to expand the traditional rules of the RPG and take the genre to a different level. However, not many gameplay details have been shared about the game yet.
Tomaszkiewicz stated that Rebel Wolves being a smaller team makes communication easier and increases creative energy. Emphasizing that a small team can work faster and more effectively, Tomaszkiewicz stated that this structure serves their creative visions better. Despite leaving CDPR, his former colleagues expressed their support for Rebel Wolves and stated that the studio had shared values.
