A vintner in Burgundy discovered that one of his employees had stolen four bottles of wine from the vineyard.

He reported the theft to the police, who, during a search of the suspected thief’s house, found much more than the four bottles – to be precise, 7,000 bottles from several vineyards around the city of Beaune.

The bottles, which the man is believed to have picked up over the course of 15 years, are estimated to be worth around 500,000 euros, equivalent to roughly five million kroner.

Prosecutor Olivier Caracotch says, however, that they have found nothing to indicate that the man has sold any bottles, of which the most expensive grand cru wines are believed to be worth over 10,000 kroner.
