Wind in the sails for Harris – in Obama’s old home district

TV4 on site at the Democrats’ convention • “Will get a picture of who Harris is”

Now the Democrats are gathering in Chicago for a convention and to celebrate America’s first female black presidential candidate.
At the same time, demonstrations against the war in Gaza are expected outside the convention, which is considered decisive.
– We will get a clearer picture of who Kamala Harris is, and what kind of president she could be, says TV4’s USA correspondent Tomas Kvarnkullen.

On Thursday, the Democratic party convention began in Chicago, where Kamala Harris will be formally named the party’s presidential candidate.

– American voters know who she is and she has been vice president. But they may not know as much about where she stands politically, or how her political agenda would differ from President Biden’s, says TV4’s USA correspondent Tomas Kvarnkullen.

New hope for Democrats

Harris has cut into Donald Trump’s lead ahead of the presidential election in November, and several opinion polls show that support for Harris continues to increase.

Many residents of former President Barack Obama’s old Illinois home neighborhood in Chicago are now hoping that Kamala Harris will make history. Just the same way their former neighbor became.

– It would be wonderful to see a black woman as president, says a resident to TV4 Nyheterna.

Protests are expected

The convention is surrounded by enormous security as tens of thousands of people gathered in downtown Chicago to demonstrate against the war in Gaza.

Although the party has welcomed peaceful demonstrations, there is an imminent risk that the demonstrations will take all the attention.

– Should these protests, which have already started some distance from the arena, grow really large, or become violent, it could become problematic.

– Then it would overshadow the convention, which you want to be a kind of celebration and a way for the party to end up behind its candidate before the election.
