Pole vaulter Wilma Murto convincingly opened his winter competition season. Murto broke Finland’s all-time best indoor track score of 481 on Saturday in Kuortane.
The result is the second best result of the 25-year-old Murro’s career. Murto has only jumped better at the 2022 Summer European Championships in Munich, when he won the European Championship with a score of 485.
– My first comment on the congratulations was that it has gone better once. The second best result of my career, so there is no complaining about this kind of opening of the season, Murto happily told Urheilu by phone after the race.
– It means a lot that such a good result came right away in the opening race. Of course, I knew that the trainings had gone well and that the features had improved. Technology will then follow. Powers are starting to be found, but the technology still needs a little cleaning.
At the end of the grueling competition, Murto attempted three times from the height of 486. Murto cleared his opening height of 445 on his first jump, 460 was exceeded on the second, 475 on the first, as well as the height of 481.
– Quite OK. It showed a slight fluctuation and variation in running. I’m still not used to using big paddles so much, so there was a bit of digging in them. It comes through competition, Murto stated about SE companies.
As in recent years, Murto has stayed in Finland for the winter. He describes the training season as consistent and good.
– It’s been nice to play sports and it’s nice to make a competitive season out of this.
Saga Andersson finished second in the Kuortanene competition with a score of 385.
The World Indoor Athletics Championships will be held in Glasgow at the beginning of March. With his 481 result, Murto rose to the top of the international statistics of the starting Halli era.
Murto won bronze at the World Championships in Budapest last summer. The achievement is nominated for the most inspiring sports moment of the year at Thursday’s Sports Gala. But what was the most moving sports moment of the year that ended for Murro, if you can’t choose your own achievement?
– That’s bad! The first thing that comes to mind is tennis’ Davis Cup. It was pretty tough. At the top this year, I think there are many consistent good moments at the top, Murto said.
