Wilma Murto missed the pole vault final at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow. The star jumper does not want to take any risks, because the European Championships and the Olympics await in the summer.
Pole star Wilma Murto missed the final at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow. The three-time medalist was in trouble from the starting height of 455, but Salolainen surpassed it in third place.
He didn’t go over the next height, but left the game because of the pain in his Achilles tendon. The pain was the same that forced Murro to leave the race after crossing 480 last week in France as well.
– We tried to control it during the week, and I tried to see what we could do with it, but I realized after that torn crossing that today is not the day to test the limits. Big summer ahead and let’s try to be smart, Murto stated.
– After each jump, there was a little weighing, whether it was worth it and whether you could do it. The sport is such that the biggest risk is not the small pain, but also the fact that if you fumble a little, something can happen during the jump itself. When I rolled off the mattress after the third jump, I decided that it was not worth continuing.
Murto was disappointed with the situation, but reminded of the summer European Championships and the Paris Olympics.
– However, in order of importance, this was the third of the Games. In the summer I want to be at my best, and today I tried not to dig the hole terribly deep. Let’s take a little break from this, and the goal is to start the summer healthy.
– It’s a difficult decision, and it’s not easy, but once the first feeling subsides, you can also be proud of yourself for being patient sometimes.
Murto said that he would apply for further examinations in Finland.
– Let’s continue to find out and see how we can get into the summer with our skins intact. Let’s go ahead of it.
