Pole vaulter in the summer of 2017 Wilma Murto could only compete in the under-20 European Championships in Grosseto, Italy. The then 19-year-old Murto finished third.
In the same race, a Briton a couple of years younger took the silver Molly Caudery. Seven years later, they are each other’s main opponents at the adult European Championships. This time also on Italian soil.
Murto is the defending champion in Rome and a clear medal favorite from the basics. Caudery, on the other hand, will jump in Rome as a fresh indoor track World Championship winner and the current number one jumper in Europe.
Born in 2000, Caudery has become a world-class jumper in the last year. This is a woman whose life includes many kinds of coincidences.
Fractures, fractures and fractures
At the Junior World Championships held in Tampere six years ago, Caudery was still a very unknown name to athletics fans. The Brit was only ninth.
Since that year, many seasons went wrong due to injuries. During the last couple of years, Caudery has been healthy for a long time and the profit development is in line with that. In two years, the record has improved by as much as 26 cents.

Caudery is therefore very prone to various accidents. Unlike, for example, Murto, who competed twice at the Olympics, the young Briton has not yet jumped in a five-ring competition.
The Olympic dream is so important to Caudery that he tries to be more careful when preparing for the Paris Games.
In his spare time, Caudery enjoys skiing, surfing and cliff jumping. His coach Scott Simpson has tried to make sense of his athlete.
– When I cut my finger three years ago, Scott said I need to be more careful.
In addition to accidents, he has a tendency to lose his valuables, for example, on flights.
– My partner is exactly the same. It’s just part of life. I never take anything too seriously, Caudery told the media.
Caudery also told The Guardin about one of his most recent complaints during the reign. He had tied his rod bag to the roof of the car as usual.
The garage door came loose and the wings fell from the roof of the car to hang over the front of the car.
– I called Scott (coach) and said that the roof rack has come off and the fins are lying around. He just stated, ok, I’ll pick you up.
“Wilma’s Advantage”
Despite her fussiness, Caudery is a very tough woman on the pole. In the winter, he broke his record of 486 and at the end of the indoor season, he took his first world championship victory.
Since the beginning of summer, he has jumped 484 and is among the gold candidates at the Paris Olympics.
– He has gained a lot more speed in running. He’s already really good with soap. However, the extra cents have come through the fact that he has gained more power in his runs, Urheilu’s expert and former pole vaulter Matti Mononen states.
Based on the qualifying, Caudery was in a very dazzling blow. Mononen highlights what is Murro’s clear strength.
