Petter Northug wants to take part in the WC in Trondheim after the turn of the year.
That will never happen, says William Poromaa.
– It would have been fun to meet Petter, but I don’t think he will go, says the Swede to Sportbibeln.
In December 2018, the Norwegian ski king announced Peter Northug38, that he had done his part as a cross-country skier. After four Olympic medals (two gold) and 16 World Cup medals (13 gold), he had had enough. At that time, the Swedes had William Poromaa23, didn’t even have time to debut in the World Cup. This season they may meet for the first time.
Petter Northug wants to compete in the WC
Although it has been six years since he retired for real, Petter Northug has for a couple of months now had the goal of qualifying for the home WC in Trondheim, which runs from February 26 to March 9 next year. He made a comeback in long-distance running two years ago and that’s when the dream was awakened. However, it is not an easy journey to the WC. Right now, nothing actually indicates that the Norwegian will be trusted in the national team again. He has also been injured during the autumn.
– All the parameters are working against me. It’s just too fucking bad. You feel rotten, old and sluggish. The mobility you had in your 20s, unfortunately, you don’t remember what it was like. And when you remember, everything feels really rubbish, he told NRK earlier this year.

For it to even feel like a reasonable dream, Northug would have had to qualify for the Scandinavian Cup and then the World Cup. With some good results there, maybe, maybe it could have become relevant with a WC selection. But Northug was also forced to withdraw from the Scandinavian Cup due to back problems.
– I want to, but I can’t go. So I only have to train lightly, he said according to Viasport.
William Poromaa does not believe in Northug in the WC
One person who would have liked to have met Petter Northug in the WC is William Poromaa. The fact that the two have never stood on the starting line together and that Petter is a real legend naturally means that the Swede is attracted by the idea of having Northug in the championship. But at the same time, he is convinced that it will never happen.
– No, I don’t think so. Unfortunately, one must say. It would have been fun to meet Petter, but I don’t think he will go, he tells Sportbibeln.

William Poromaa withdrew from his last competition in Davos, Switzerland last weekend. He had a chance for a podium place for a long time, but dropped out of the competition after just over 11 km.
– At first I can keep the speed I want – but when it starts to get heavier, it’s like the body just dies, he said afterwards.
Now it remains to be seen how things will turn out for him with the Tour de Ski and with the future WC upload.
It would of course have been very entertaining if Petter Northug had been at the WC. But it feels like it’s slipping out of his hands now that he can’t even take part in the Scandinavian Cup that starts this weekend.
