However, it was a shock start for Toronto. Minnesota took the lead after just under two and a half minutes.
Then William Nylander introduced himself. With just over seven minutes left in the first period, the Swede struck. The forward played the puck in front of the goal and Auston Matthews angled in 1-1.
The assist meant that Nylander has now produced points in 17 (!) straight NHL games. He thus goes up alongside Connor McDavid’s record, from 2021/2022, and is, together with the Canadian, the active player who has been responsible for the longest scoring streak.
Sundin: “Very impressed”
It paved the way for Toronto’s turnaround. Because at the end of the first period, Matthew Knies sent in 2–1.
During the break, Nylander was praised by the legendary Mats Sundin.
– I am very impressed with what he is doing now. It is incredibly unique to have four forwards like this (Nylander, Matthews, Tavares, Marner) with the excellence they have.
“Memory for life”
After a scoreless second period, Minnesota put on a strong third and rallied from a 3–1 deficit to make it 3–3.
The match went to extra time and there the super Swede stepped forward again. Nylander got hold of the puck in his own zone and took off. The 27-year-old slalomed through the Minnesota defense and settled the game with his 4–3 goal.
– I just tried to take it towards the goal and create a situation. It was nice that it went in and that we could take home the win. You will never forget this experience. It will be a memory for life, says the hero of the match at the press conference after the decision.
