William Nylander showed class for the Toronto Maple Leafs last night

Toronto top scorer Auston Matthews scored his 50th and 51st goals of the season in tonight’s NHL ice hockey. He is thus the fastest, US-born goal scorer in the professional league in 28 years.

And the teammate William Nylander scored twice as Toronto beat Arizona 6–3. That means he (temporarily?), with 74 points, overtakes Vancouver’s Elias Pettersson in the points league as the best Swede.

Matthews, who currently tops the NHL’s scoring league, reached 50 goals after 54 games.

The article continues below.

The goal came in numerical superiority five minutes into the first period against Arizona, played by the Swede Timothy Liljegren. Matthews then scored his 51st goal well into the second period.

His previous record was 50 goals in 62 games, and the 26-year-old’s new personal best is also the best among all active NHL players.

But no one beats the legend Wayne Gretzkywho reached 50 goals in 39 games while playing for Edmonton in 1981–82.
