William Nylander extended his senseless streak last night – is now the best in Toronto Maple Leafs history(!)

The Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the most storied associations in the NHL.
But no one, in club history, has started a season better than William Nylander.
The Swede kept alive his monster suite last night – as the first player ever.

The Toronto Maple Leafs entered this year’s season with huge expectations on them, with high hopes of finally advancing beyond the second round of the NHL playoffs. The team has been spiced up with several tough stars, and still has its core of superstars such as Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander.

The historic start

But having so many stars also means that it is difficult to stay under the salary cap that the NHL has. During the summer there was a lot of talk from experts and supporters that William Nylander should perhaps be traded away from the team, to free up salary space and relieve the pressure on management. But Nylander stayed, and today probably no one regrets it.

William Nylander had started the season with points in eight(!) straight games before tonight’s meeting with the Los Angeles Kings. The Maple Leafs did not offer the fans any further Halloween entertainment, as they were down against the Kings with a clear 3-0 with half the game played. For a long time it looked as if William Nylander’s matchless streak would be broken, but it was not to be.

Nine(!) straight games

Midway through the third period, William Nylander was credited with a second assist on John Tavares’ layup goal, giving William Nylander points in the first nine games of the season. And it’s actually historically good. According to the NHL’s own statistics base, it is the first time in the long, storied history of the Toronto Maple Leafs that a player has scored in the first nine games of the season.

During the nine games, Nylander has been recorded for six goals and a total of 13 points, and with that he is in a very respectable eighth place in the NHL’s scoring. However, he is only third among the Swedes, as both Elias Pettersson and Jesper Bratt – with 16 and 14 points respectively – are ahead of him, in second and fifth place in the prestigious league.
