Who is the energy allowance intended for?

The energy surcharge was created by the government to compensate low-income households for the high energy prices. The surcharge was originally 800 euros, but was increased to 1300 euros in July.

People with a low income must apply for the allowance from their own municipality, which is responsible for the payment. The income limit is a maximum of 120 percent of the social minimum. For single people that is a net monthly income of EUR 1310.05 per month. For cohabitants this concerns an amount of 1971.05 euros per month.

Minister Carola Schouten advised municipalities to exclude four groups from the allowance: young people up to the age of 21, people who are homeless or homeless, people who live in an institution and students. Most municipalities have adopted that advice, although some municipalities make exceptions.
