The hearing of the Turkish parliament starts at 2 p.m., and the approval of the law may take place in less than an hour. After that, the law still goes to President Erdoğan for approval.
Today may finally be the day when the Turkish parliament confirms Finland’s NATO membership.
– Many mornings in Finland, there has already been hope that the Turkish MPs would remember us. Now that wish may finally come true here in Ankara, says ‘s foreign correspondent following the process in the Turkish capital Mika Mäkeläinen.
As an operation, establishing the law is not complicated. The law is short and simple. It has been predicted that its confirmation could take place even in less than an hour.
The parliament’s hearing starts at 2 p.m., and the parliament is in session until 7 p.m. at the latest. In the meantime, the law will probably be confirmed, Mäkeläinen estimates.
Thus, in the final minutes, MPs hardly get excited to discuss the law any longer. Gravel sounds can be heard mainly from the left. The left-wing HDP in the opposition can vote against the law as an expression of opinion, but from the point of view of the final result, it is not important.
There may still be a small delay
When the parliament has approved the law from its side, the law still goes to the president’s desk. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said that he supports the law.
However, there may still be a slight delay in the journey.
When the Turkish parliament discussed, for example, the confirmation of North Macedonia’s NATO membership, it took the parliament five days to get the bill to the president.
The president, on the other hand, can confirm the law within 15 days.
When the law finally has the President’s signature, the law goes into the national statute book, and the process is finally complete.
