What is this case all about?
The case revolves around an Aldi supermarket that opened in December. It is an emergency branch in the new residential area of Blokhoeve. The other supermarkets feel passed over, because the municipality of Nieuwegein leased its land one-on-one to Aldi and they were therefore unable to open a supermarket there.
The judge previously ruled in their favor: the municipality should not have favored Aldi. Every day that the Aldi still opens, the municipality has to pay thousands of euros in penalty payments to the other supermarkets. That amount has now risen to almost 200,000 euros.
