Will the dream casting actually come true

Manga fans are relatively unanimous that the Netflix adaptation One Piece has done a pirate-like job so far when it comes to casting the colorful characters. Another Fan dream cast may now have been secretly confirmed – through an official Netflix video with Luffy actor Iñaki Godoy.

One Piece star visits Cobra Kai – is the ultimate Netflix crossover being prepared?

As a fan of the Karate Kid series Cobra Kai, Godoy visited the Netflix set to meet the cast and crew of the martial arts dramedy. He seems to have a special connection with Miguel actor Xolo Maridueña, whom he even referred to as “brother” on one occasion. This supposed hint immediately made fans sit up and take notice.

The One Piece live-action series has, among other things, Luffy’s older brother Portgas D. Ace to cast. And don’t the two Netflix curly-heads look quite similar? If you look at the comments under the set visit video, there is almost no other topic. One user writes: “I’m already so emotionally invested in Xolo as Ace that I would honestly cry if he wasn’t.”

The only question is whether Netflix placed these Ace references intentionally or whether fans are, as is so often the case, reading something into it through wishful thinking.

This is what the Cobra Kai star said about his potential One Piece casting

Hawk actor Jacob Bertrand, who had visited the One Piece set, confronted his co-star Maridueña months ago with the burning fan question of whether he had been cast as Ace. This is what he had to say about it:

Not yet. It’s a dream, but at the same time it has to be right. I don’t want to do it if it’s not right, you know? I have to audition for it, like everyone else.

The casting of the Cobra Kai star for the future of the Netflix series would join the list of already confirmed cast members for season 2. These again seem to be well received by manga and anime fans – and Ace would be the karate cherry on the pirate sundae.

Filming for the second season of One Piece is currently underway in South Africa and is scheduled to continue until the end of the year. New episodes about the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates are not expected before the end of 2025 or even 2026.
