The main remnants of Saab’s car manufacturing were bought out of the bankruptcy estate by the newly formed company NEVS AB, which was owned by Chinese investors.
After financial problems, NEV’s electric car project Emily GT was sold to the Lebanese company EV Electra, which says it aims to put the car into production – perhaps in the old Trollhättan factory.

The brand is in safe hands
However, neither NEVS nor EV Electra own the rights to either the Saab name or the classic Gripen logo.
The brand Saab is instead still owned by the defense company Saab AB, from which the passenger car business was spun off in 2000.
Now the company’s press manager has Mattias Rådström informed about the future of the Saab name as a car brand in an interview with Business Insider Poland.

It looks dark
– No, we have no plans to restore Saab as a car brand, said Mattias Rådström to Business Insider Polska. He also clarifies that the company’s focus is on the defense industry.
According to Mattias Rådström, Saab also rules out selling the rights to the brand, in the way that, for example, has happened with the classic British MG brand. MG today has Chinese owners, and mainly sells cheap volume cars without much in common with the brand’s sporty history.
The classic Gripen emblem is owned by the truck manufacturer Scania, with which Saab was merged for a long time. They too were afraid of what would happen to the logo if the rights fell into the wrong hands, and made sure that NEVS was not allowed to use it.
