European Council President Charles Michel and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have agreed to revive ties between the EU and Turkey, Michel announced on Twitter.
“Good meeting with President Erdogan at the NATO summit,” he writes.
On Monday, Erdogan set as a requirement to approve Sweden as a NATO member that discussions on Turkish EU membership be resumed.
The US supports Turkey’s quest to become a member of the EU, but does not believe that Ankara should link it to approving Sweden’s NATO application, reports AFP.
– The US has for a number of years supported Turkey’s EU aspirations and we continue to do so, says Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department.
– However, we do not believe that it should be an obstacle to Sweden’s entry into NATO.
