At least 20 of the country’s municipalities have had wild boar roosting in waste facilities in the past year. A further eleven municipalities have at one time or another had wild boars in the refuse stations, with the risk of the spread of swine fever that this entails. This shows a survey conducted by TV4 Nyheterna.

– I think it is both remarkable and to me surprising that so many municipalities have wild boars at their waste disposal sites, says state epizootologist Karl Ståhl at the Swedish Veterinary Institute (SVA) to TV4 Nyheterna.

– It is a risk factor that wild boars get access to garbage where there may be meat or meat remains, he continues.

About 40 cases of African swine fever among wild boars have been found in the area of Fagersta. There, wild boars have had access to household waste in the past.

The TV4 News survey was answered by 166 of the country’s 290 municipalities.
