Only after that striking amount of bones were found in the 19th century did the first tentative indications that Wijk bij Duurstede 1000 years ago could have been something different than the quiet, picturesque town it is today. For years, excavations have been carried out in and around the city and archaeological treasures have been unearthed one after another. With the highlight of the Fibula of Dorestad, one of the largest archaeological finds in the Netherlands. The piece of jewelry is only 8.5 cm in size, but made of gold and richly decorated with precious stones and pearls. Two boys playing found the treasure in an old well in 1978. The piece of jewelry is in the archives of the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden.
