With its consciously sought-after closeness to reality, Band of Brothers stood out as a series success on HBO in 2001 and is still a war series masterpiece over 20 years later. The spiritual successors also emulated the detailed depiction of the Second World War by drawing on concrete veteran experiences. The latest series Masters of the Air is currently running on Apple TV+ and impresses with new facets of the change of perspective in the cockpit.

But it doesn’t matter whether Dick Winter (Damien Lewis) leads his soldiers in losing battles overland towards Germany, whether Robert Leckie (James Badge Dale) jumps from island to island in the fight against Japan or whether Buck Cleven and Bucky Egan (Austin Butler and Callum Turner) drop their bombs in air battles: Each of the three series knows how to convincingly capture the terrible experiences from the loss of a comrade to the devastating crash in one series. Which one wins the race as the best war series? Our opinions differ on this. But all three are worthwhile.
