The company announced in April last year that the Lord of the Rings MMO project, developed in partnership with Athlon Games, was canceled. Speaking to GameSpot in a new interview, Christoph Hartmannannounced that Middle-earth Enterprises, which holds the Lord of the Rings license, has chosen to use a clause in the contract that allows it to terminate the rights agreement if one of the partners buys it. According to Hartmann, things got very complicated after this item. Afterwards, Amazon explains that while they explored ways to continue working on the project with Tencent, they were unable to make any progress in negotiations and therefore walked away from the business.

The problem, according to Hartmann, was that both companies were too big. “Something could have been done to work with Tencent, but I think as companies we are too big to be partners because they have the license,” he said.

“So we decided it was better not to work there together. Then we tried to come up with something that had both ends, but I think it took too long.”
