For years, the price of bananas has remained stable in France. But it’s over: in March, it will increase. The price of a kilo of bananas should jump by 20%. Inflation and rising production costs are to blame.
It is the second most consumed fruit in France after the apple. Each French person eats, on average, 11 kilos of bananas per year. But the most regular consumers should be prepared to have to shell out more. The price increase announced for March will also impact the fruit.
Pierre Monteux, Managing Director of UGPBan (Union of Banana Producer Groups), explains that ” the inflationary environment that the world has known has not spared the banana industry, with considerable increases in production, packaging, boxes, pallets or even fertilizers which have almost doubled “.
” There have also been increases linked to salary increases. All this has generated a rise in the cost of production of bananas extremely important than the last 24 months. These increases have been passed on to each level of the chain: producers, transporters, ripeners, mass distribution “, continues the leader.
” In the end, the price is likely to see some increases, between 15% and 20% », resumes Pierre Monteux, who wonders: « Will they be sufficient to ensure the sustainability of our businesses? »
