Why the most important graphics card in 2023 is disappointing to many people

The RTX 4060 Ti was anticipated by many gamers. Because it promises a lot of performance for Full HD, currently the most popular resolution among gamers. But the first testers are disappointed. This is not only due to the price, but also to the small video memory.

The essentials in brief:

  • According to various statements, the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti will be available in stores from May 24, 2023.
  • The graphics card delivers high performance for Full HD and offers support for DLSS 3.0 and other Nvidia-exclusive features.
  • According to testers, the video memory is tight at 8 GB, but a version with 16 GB is to follow in July.
  • The price for the RTX 4060 Ti (8 GB) starts at 439 euros (RRP), the 16 GB version should cost 549 euros (RRP).
  • Which graphics card is it? The RTX 4060 Ti is currently Nvidia’s cheapest entry into the RTX 4000 series. Although one can argue about “cheap”, because after all, the card costs over 400 euros. Nevertheless, the start was eagerly awaited, because many hope for a GPU that doesn’t cost them 1,500 euros.

But the first tests are restrained and not very enthusiastic. Because the performance is right, but video memory and price give cause for criticism. However, there is also a positive ray of hope.

what is positive Basically, many testers explain that you get a good and powerful graphics card with the RTX 4060 Ti. Above all, the high energy efficiency in combination with generally low power consumption is a big plus.

what is negative On the other hand, there is the small jump in performance compared to the previous generation: The RTX 4060 Ti offers an average of just 5 – 10% more performance than the RTX 3060 Ti and at the same price. Thanks to DLSS 3.0 and “Frame Generation” you can get a lot more out of the GPU, but so far only a few games support the new technology.

This also leads to the poor price-performance ratio, which many testers criticize: Nvidia still sold the predecessor to QHD gamers, and at the same price. A look at Geizhals.de is enough: You can currently get the RTX 3060 Ti for an average of 380 euros.

Where do (almost) all testers agree? All major online magazines such as ComputerBase, PCGamesHardware and PCWelt also agree on one thing: The video memory of 8 GB is now simply borderline. That’s just about enough for Full HD, but the predecessor was still a QHD graphics card.

For example, the colleagues from ComputerBase write in their test: “With 12 GB as with the GeForce RTX 3060 from 2021, the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti would be a significantly better, because more future-proof graphics card.”

    The tests at a glance:

  • “Clearly, it can set itself apart from older models, primarily due to its very good energy efficiency and the new frame generation – if you play one of the few games that currently support the RTX 4000-exclusive technology. In other areas, the improvements are smaller, such as accelerating AI and ray tracing calculations.” (GameStar.de)
  • “Every buyer must be aware that the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti can already run into problems in current games. The memory requirement will increase in the future, problems are inevitable here. It doesn’t help that the consequences of a lack of memory are even greater than with the predecessor.” (ComputerBase.de)
  • “The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB delivers a mixed picture in the test. The graphics card is well suited for the purpose chosen by Nvidia, namely gaming in Full HD resolution. (…) But the memory configuration of 8 GB VRAM and a 128-bit interface can become a problem for the RTX 4060 Ti not only in gaming, but also in the creative area.” (PCWelt.de)
  • “However, the typical mid-range buyer turns up his nose at the RRP of 439 euros and looks at the rest of the equipment. Here we see the real problems: Nvidia not only delivers small advances – there are also standstills and tangible steps backwards. memory plus? None – the RTX 3060 even debuted with 12 GiByte and was later launched with 8 GiByte.” (PCGamesHardware.de)
  • How does the future look? At least there is a ray of hope at this point. Nvidia has already presented an RTX 4060 Ti with 16 GB of video memory, which should follow in July 2023. After all, Nvidia wants an additional 110 euros for the 8 GB more. Then you pay at least 549 euros (RRP) for the mid-range graphics card for Full HD.

For whom is the RTX 4060 Ti worthwhile?

    Who might consider buying?

  • You are looking for the cheapest entry into the RTX 4000 series and would like to use DLSS 3.0 and “Frame Generation”.
  • You come from an old graphics card like a GTX 1060 and are looking for a noticeable upgrade for your computer.
  • You want to play in Full HD in the long term and don’t want to switch to WQHD or 4K in the near future.
  • Are there alternatives? If you don’t care about DLSS 3.0, you can also use a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti or an RTX 3070. The prices are currently in the same range, but you only get 8 GB of video memory here.

Instead, you can also use the RX 6700 XT from AMD. Here you are currently also paying around 400 euros, but you get more video memory (12 GB) and the bottom line is more performance – but you have to do without Nvidia-exclusive features.

RTX 4060 Ti vs RX 7600: AMD’s new graphics card coming this week?

What about the competition? It is currently suspected that AMD’s RX 7600 will be released later this week. It should then be on a similar level to the RTX 4060 Ti in terms of price and performance. So far there are only guesses, AMD has not yet announced a date. So here it is a matter of waiting.

Nevertheless, video storage is and will remain a big topic in 2023. This is also because more and more games end up on the market poorly optimized.

The current discussion about the Xbox Series S shows why many believe that the era of graphics cards with only 8 GB of video memory is simply over:
