With 6 and 7 seasons respectively, The Rookie and 9-1-1 have established themselves as real hits. Exciting storylines, explosive action, strong characters and lots of drama – exactly what viewers love.
With such ratings giants, a crossover is literally in the air. Successful series that meet each other? The Series stars themselves fuel the rumorsAfter 9-1-1 star Oliver Stark got the ball rolling, Tim actor Eric Winter from The Rookie is now fueling the idea further.
We know at least 5 reasonswhy police-firefighter reunions would be appropriate in Los Angeles.
Reason 1: Daily work of emergency services
Let’s start with the almost identical content of the two series. Both focus on the work of first responders, i.e. emergency personnel from Police, fire brigade and rescue serviceswho are called into action first.
Since both The Rookie and 9-1-1 deal with these daily challenges and dramatic missions, the plots of the episodes could easily be combined.
Reason 2: Personal drama is also given top priority
The series not only share the professional similarities of their main characters, they also shed light on the private drama during operations and after work with great interest.
This common mix of themes offers the ideal conditions for a crossover without it feeling like two completely different series worlds are colliding.
Reason 3: Both series are set in Los Angeles
Considering that both The Rookie and 9-1-1 are set in the same city, the clash is actually a given. Both series are set in the greater Los Angeles, California area, so the merging of the locations would not even have to be artificially brought about. They could simply run into each other during an operation.
Reason 4: Both series are now on the same channel
Apart from the content, the rights situation must also be right. One promising reason is that 9-1-1, like The Rookie, based at the US broadcaster ABC is.
The action-packed series used to be based at Fox, but has been produced by ABC since season 7 and premiered on Disney+ on July 17, 2024. This makes a crossover much more likely.
Reason 5: ABC is more open to crossovers than ever before
Most recently, ABC has impressively shown how willing they are to expand their 9-1-1 universe. The 100th episode featured an unexpected crossover with The Bachelor, and this season ABC even paired Will Trent with the Real Housewives of Atlanta – a real highlight for fans of unusual TV mixes.
The Rookie, on the other hand, already featured the talent show American Idol in an episode a few years ago.
The series stars themselves are making fans excited for a crossover
What is special about the rumors about a possible crossover between 9-1-1 and The Rookie is that they were started by the stars themselves. Oliver Stark, the main character Buck in 9-1-1, speculated in an interview with Variety whether the move to ABC could open up an exciting crossover opportunity with The Rookie.
He openly admitted that he was not fully aware of the legal details, but he found the idea of seeing the two universes collide “wonderful“. In the midst of this speculation, The Rookie star Eric Winter (who plays the main character Tim) speaks and is enthusiastic. According to Hello!, he finds the idea entertaining and is open to it.
Fans have even discovered a connection: The fire station in The Rookie is numbered 118, just like the one in 9-1-1. Now it remains to be seen whether this exciting speculation event will become reality.
