When you stand at the top of the Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren in Amersfoort to watch the huge bells, you must wear good hearing protection when they sound. “Otherwise you will become completely deaf,” says whistleblower Hans while holding a thick rope. “We have seven bells that together weigh more than seven thousand kilos. We ring them by pulling this rope. With the large bell it takes about a minute and a half before there is enough movement for the clapper to hit the bell.”
