The demon lord Diablo is the namesake of one of the largest game series in the world. Now comes Diablo 4 – and of all people the Obermotz is not at the start. So why does the game still bear his name? MeinMMO explains.
Why is Diablo 4 called that? The short answer would be: for recognition. Diablo not only stands for the character, but also for the game itself. When old hands read: “Here comes a new Diablo”, then they know:
What sets Diablo apart from other games in the hack’n’slay genre is the traditionally dark, bloody gothic style. That’s why the game is called Diablo 4, even if Diablo herself doesn’t appear at all, but the demon Lilith is the big opponent.
However, since Diablo 4 is the first time a number of players have started the series, the question of the supreme evil has come up a few times. Who exactly is Diablo – and will we see him in Diablo 4?

Who is Diablo? The eponymous demon has been the boss of every part of Diablo since the first part, with the exception of Diablo Immortal, at least in the base game. The expansions then often brought other end bosses like Baal or Malthael.
Diablo makes it clear that he is, or wants to be, the “supreme evil,” the worst of the demon lords, each representing some kind of sin or negative emotion. Diablo is the Lord of Terror and is considered one of the hardest bosses in the game.
As such, he is enormously powerful and is always brought back to life somehow, often by servants or cultists. Some also attempt to claim his power for themselves, using his remains as an artifact.
As a demon, he cannot really die, but is always reborn in the hells. The angel Malthael tried to prevent this and wiped out 90% of the people.

Will we see Diablo in Diablo 4? Strictly speaking, Diablo is already in the game, at least partially (literally). Lilith carries the skull of the supreme evil in her hands and probably uses it as a magical artifact.
Whether she will try to revive Diablo or even kill her for good, we don’t know yet. For the time being, the Prince of Hell will not be in the game, but that cannot be ruled out in later seasons or in expansions.
There are even theories and indications that deal with exactly this. Just how good that would be for the series is debatable:
