    Winter is the season that we most naturally associate with coughing. However, it is common to cough in summer as well. Dr. Gérald Kierzek, emergency physician and medical director of Doctissimo, details the different causes.

    Coughing is an unpleasant symptom, which is often associated with minor winter ailments. However, it is not unusual to cough in the summer when the good weather returns. Dr. Gérald Kierzek presents the different possible causes.

    Seasonal allergies

    Allergies to pollen, grass and other seasonal allergens are common in summer. “These are the allergens that can irritate the respiratory tract and cause coughing.” explains Dr. Gérald Kierzek.

    Dry air

    Dry air, often present in summer, can dry out the respiratory tract and cause coughing. “It’s not just natural air that can be dry. Using air conditioners can also dry out indoor air” adds the doctor.

    Air pollution

    “Air pollution levels can increase in summer, especially in urban areas. And air pollutants can irritate the lungs and cause coughing” further explains the medical director of Doctissimo.

    Respiratory infections

    Although less frequent in summer, respiratory infections do not disappear completely.This is why a common cold or bronchitis can still occur and cause a cough.

    Asthma

    Asthma can be triggered by different causes. “Allergens, pollution, dry air or even exercise can trigger an attack and these are common factors in the summer.” recalls the emergency doctor. “People with asthma may therefore cough more frequently during this season.”

    Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

    GERD can cause a chronic cough.Symptoms may be exacerbated by certain foods and drinks consumed more frequently in summer, such as spicy foods, citrus fruits and carbonated drinks.” explains Gérald Kierzek.

    Environmental irritants

    “Barbecue smoke, campfires, and other environmental irritants can also cause coughing.” finally considers the doctor.

    After reviewing the different causes of a cough, the doctor also recalls the ways to relieve it. For this, Gérald Kierzek puts forward several tips:

    • Avoid allergensin “staying indoors when pollen levels are high and using air filters” ;
    • Drink regularly plenty of water to keep your airways hydrated;
    • Use a humidifierto help maintain indoor air humidity;
    • Avoid irritantssuch as cigarette smoke or other environmental irritants.
    • Consult a doctor if the cough persists.because “It is important to consult a health professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment” concludes the doctor.
