The new Škoda Superb has been developed in symbiosis with the new Passat, which Marcus was test driving in France a number of weeks ago.

Škoda has led the development, while Volkswagen has had to decide exactly what should distinguish the Passat. At first glance, you see many genetic similarities, but the cars nevertheless stand out in different ways.

According to Škoda, the new Superb is “aggressively elegant”, while I would argue that it is not very aggressive at all. Having said that, it is an attractive play that is conservatively laid out.

Škoda has long been associated with a decidedly practical image. The Czechs continue on that track with the new Superb as well.

For example, the steering wheel has physical buttons and in the center console you will find elements such as physical knobs. You really get the feeling that just about everything is very well thought out, something you can’t necessarily take for granted in the automotive world.

The feeling of quality is consistently high and when it comes to material selection, you can choose anything from fabric to leather.

The infotainment system consists of a 13-inch screen that houses the brand’s latest software. The system works well and is fairly intuitive.

The outgoing Škoda Superb – the best-selling generation with 866,000 units produced – was renowned for its huge rear seat.

The new Superb adopts the same thinking but the back seat has shrunk a notch in favor of the absolutely gigantic boot. It holds a whopping 690 liters – class-leading – and is enough to act as a moving vehicle.

Superb’s cornerstones consist of value for money, innovation, as well as plenty of space and comfort. The comfort aspect makes itself known throughout the car.

Among the most relevant powertrains for the Swedish market is the gasoline mild hybrid of 150 horsepower, the four-wheel drive diesel of 193 horsepower, and the plug-in hybrid of 204 horsepower.

I began my test drive behind the wheel of the entry-level model. As for the Passat, I struck a blow for the entry-level model, which was so good that you can’t reasonably imagine needing more. I would argue the same is true for the Superb.

The seven-speed dual-clutch box shifts lightning fast and is constantly on the alert. The gas at the bottom hardly causes you to be overwhelmed by any adrenaline rush, but it is undoubtedly “just right”, an expression that in many cases can be used in connection with Škoda’s products.

The Superb is incredibly easy to drive and you can push a lot more than is reasonable on Portugal’s curvy country roads. Even with rough bumps, the suspension handles all surfaces with flying colours.

The model exudes enormous competence and the four-wheel-drive diesel variant feels quite snappy and gets the power down the hill without any problems. The springs can be adjusted in 15 different steps – from soft as seventeen to hard as eight – but the Superb never invites particularly sporty driving.

The car glides over the asphalt with ease and almost rocks forward. It’s really only when the road can be mistaken for a minefield that the suspension gets a little sweaty. That said, the Superb is hugely comfortable.

The plug-in hybrid boasts “a range of over 100 kilometers on electricity”. The car is not yet type-approved, which is why an official number has not yet been communicated. It is said to be enough to satisfy 99 percent of customers’ needs.

The electric drive makes an already quiet driving experience even quieter. The gas at the bottom, however, results in another fifth and the powertrain is not immediately felt on the cut.

Having said that, plug-in hybrids mean enormous flexibility and the freedom to be able to drive on electricity on a daily basis but switch to fossil fuels when long-distance driving is needed is hard to beat.

The new Škoda Superb absolutely shines. It offers a high dose of value for money – even if it is slightly more expensive than the Passat (at least in Sweden). On the whole, the Superb is experienced as incredibly well thought out.

It’s hard to recommend anything other than the entry-level model – the front-wheel-drive petrol mild hybrid with 150 horsepower – unless you’re in need of four-wheel drive. The plug-in hybrid is only offered with front-wheel drive.

Superb focuses wholeheartedly on its strengths – comfort and practicality. The car is traditionally laid out and over the years has become an increasingly luxury-focused feature in the fleet. The end result is hard not to be impressed by.
