After the death of Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah in the attack on the south of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, all eyes turned to his replacement. Nasrallah’s cousin Hashim Safiyuddin, who is seen as his successor, stands out as the new leader of Hezbollah. Safiyuddin, who oversees the group’s political affairs as head of Hezbollah’s executive committee, also sits on the Jihad Council, which manages the group’s military operations.
Safiyuddin, who was declared a terrorist by the US State Department in 2017, mostly reflects his military stance and commitment to the Palestinian cause with his public statements.
NASRALLAH LEADED ITS TRANSFORMATION INTO A MILITARY POWER
Born in Beirut in 1960, Hassan Nasrallah became the leader of Hezbollah in 1992. Nasrallah led decades of conflict with Israel and led Hezbollah’s transformation into a military force with regional influence. Nasrallah once again demonstrated his regional influence by opening fire on Israel from the south of Lebanon in support of his Palestinian ally Hamas during the nearly one-year conflict since October 7, 2023, when the attacks on Gaza began, while Yemeni and Iraqi groups also formed the “axis of resistance”. He followed Hezbollah by operating under the ” umbrella.
Nasrallah’s predecessor, Sayyed Abbas al-Musawi, was also killed by an Israeli attack in 1992.
