Who will be Player of the Year 2023?

The German Computer Game Prize (DCP) 2024 will be awarded on April 18th in Munich. Gamers, Twitch streamers and e-sports players have the chance to become Player of the Year. MeinMMO introduces you to the nominees.

What kind of price is that? Since 2020, the DCP has been honoring gamers who have distinguished themselves through special achievements with the title “Player of the Year”. The nominees include a mix of e-athletes and Twitch streamers as well as YouTubers.

Here we introduce you to the 5 nominees:

Abnormal disaster

Sandra Friedrichs is active as “Anormaldisaster” on Twitch and TikTok, where she mainly shows The Sims 4. She also uses her platform to educate about mental health in gaming and also about her experiences as a woman in the industry.

She emphasizes that gaming can be a burden on mental health, but it can also offer a retreat and an opportunity for creative development. On TikTok, the streamer also talks about what it’s like to date as a gamer and have to be told that you only play women’s games.

The DCP jury justifies the nomination by saying that Sandra “Anormaldisaster” Friedrich demonstrates reach responsibility in order to address problems relating to gaming. At the same time, entertainment never falls by the wayside with the streamer.

Here you can see Annormaldisaster in an interview with MeinMMO:

Twitch streamer wants to change the view of gaming as Miss Germany: “You can’t demonize it, but you can’t glorify it either”

Fabian Siegismund

Fabian Siegismund is a former editor of GameStar, which, like MeinMMO, belongs to Webedia.

On his YouTube channel “Siegismund” with 335,000 subscribers, Fabian Siegismund has mainly been showing Lets Plays for Battlefield and Hunt: Showdown for over 10 years. Since November 2018, he has also been regularly demonstrating his shooting skills on Twitch.

Beyond gaming, Fabian Siegismund also speaks out on social issues and takes a clear stance against hate speech and right-wing extremism. When gaming, people sometimes talk about dealing with exclusion and discrimination – that earned him a nomination for Player of the Year.

Even after his time at GameStar, he is still connected to it, for example as a guest on GameStar Talk.

Franziska Bülow

Gaming used to be just a hobby for Franziska Bülow while she worked as an administrative assistant in the public sector. In 2019, she joined the esports team Aesir eSports, where she soon took over the leadership. In 2021 she left her job in city administration for a future in gaming.

The single mother quickly realized that there are additional challenges for women in the world of e-sports and is committed to breaking down stereotypes in gaming.

She is now CEO of her own agency, PURE4U, which handles management and marketing for influencers in various fields, from gaming to art. Franziska Bülow owes her DCP nomination to her positive influence on gaming culture and her role model function.

JustBecci

Rebecca “JustBecci” Raschun is a Variety streamer on Twitch and shows a colorful mix of different games and Just Chatting to her 40,000 followers. The Austrian also publishes videos on topics such as lifestyle, gaming and the Twitch scene on YouTube.

JustBecci also deals with difficult topics such as influencer burnout, hate comments online or sexualized content on Twitch.

As a presenter, she also rocks gaming and e-sports events as well as her own cooking show “Cook, Eat, Game” for A1 eSports. The DCP jury justified JustBecci’s nomination for Player of the Year with her contribution to greater inclusion on Twitch, YouTube and the world of e-sports.

Maurice Weber

Maurice Weber is one of Webedia’s talents. MeinMMO, GamePro and GameStar also belong to Webedia.

As a member of the GameStar editorial team, strategy game expert Maurice Weber deals with grievances in gaming, such as Ubisoft’s “AAAA” game Skull and Bones (via GameStar).

He also regularly entertains his fans on Twitch and YouTube with content about games like Crusader Kings 3, Diablo 4, Baldur’s Gate 3 and everything that promises a great story.

His clear stance for diversity and against extremism has now earned Maurice a nomination for Player of the Year – another step towards absolute world domination.

How does the election take place? The Player of the Year award stands out from other DCP categories in that it is an audience award. The selection takes place in two steps:

  • First, an expert jury puts together a pre-selection of proposed gamers who have particularly distinguished themselves in the past year – this could be through their gaming performance, but also their commitment to gaming.
  • 5 nominees will then be released for election. The result is determined by the main jury and the audience rating. Voting has been running since March 18, 2024 and continues until April 11, 2024. You can currently vote for your favorite on the DCP website.
  • In contrast to other DCP categories, there is no prize money for the players of the year, only “bragging rights”. The situation is different for games: Last year, a total of 800,000 euros in prize money was distributed in 15 categories: Germany supports role-playing games that achieve 91% on Steam with 100,000 euros – 120,000 euros go to games with 68%
