who is this former left wing activist elected to the European

Lawyer at the Nîmes court and professor of law at the university, Sylvie Josserand is one of the candidates elected with the National Rally in the 2024 European elections.

The lawyer for Julien Sanchez, mayor of Beaucaire also present on the National Rally list in the European elections, “leaves the comfort of his office” to sit with Jordan Bardella and the other running mates of the Frontist party in the European Parliament. Sylvie Josserand, lawyer and lecturer at the faculty of Nîmes, had a good chance of seeing herself propelled into the political sphere by appearing in 26th place on the RN list according to the results of polls published until June 7. It’s done: she leaves the south for Strasbourg, the RN having finally obtained 31% of the votes, and 30 seats in the European Parliament.

From left-wing activism to defending the extreme right

As a student during the 1988 presidential elections, Sylvie Josserand put up posters of François Mitterrand. How could she have slipped towards the National Rally while originally having a left-wing sensibility? The lawyer told the Midday Awakening having moved closer to the party by defending Julien Sanchez, the mayor of Beaucaire also elected to the European elections, when he was sued several times by the CGT, as well as by residents of his commune and by the president of the Occitanie Region Carole Delga for a case of discrimination.

This shift seems to have occurred over time and was facilitated by the observations made by Sylvie Josserannd. According to her, the left “has turned away” from priority battles and “is more interested in minorities”. Subjects that she recognizes are interesting, but which should not be overlooked with other concerns such as access to housing, care or purchasing power, said the candidate to the local newspaper. On the other hand, it is on these subjects that the RN offers solutions according to the lawyer who says she “jumped at the chance” to join the Lepenist list to defend her ideas. Fully committed, Sylvie Josserand finds “that [l’étiquette RN] pusher [est] false and unfounded while the concerns are noble and many parties should take inspiration from them.” Assuring Le Réveil du Midi that “the RN is a serious political offer, if not the most serious.”

Socialism with National Rally sauce

Elected to Parliament for five years, Sylvie Josserand intends to lead certain battles with her party. The MEP declared that she wanted to fight for a Europe where decisions are taken unanimously by countries and not by qualified majority. She also wants the contracts concluded between the European Union and certain laboratories during the Covid-19 crisis to be made public. Like her running mates, Sylvie Josserand does not agree with migration and security policy in Europe and intends to contribute to changes.

She also explained that she wanted to “find solutions for people who are suffering”, while distinguishing herself from left-wing parties, she declared: “Today, I see that the left is more interested in minorities, in marriage for everyone, surrogacy is very interesting, I agree, but it seems to me that having enough to eat, housing, heating, living decently are priorities, no?
