Who is the killer and what is the motive

Why did Anna Klettmann have to die (Maria Simon)? This question is at the beginning of the ZDF series Yesterday we were children. Over seven episodes, it explores how lies, guilt, and shattered dreams tear apart a family into a horrific act. But surprising suspects from the area also introduced themselves, above all police officer Tim.

So was it really the inconspicuous father Peter Klettmann (Torben Liebrecht) or someone else? And what was the motive? here Let’s explain the end of Yesterday we were children.

Warning, there are spoilers for Yesterday we were children.

Yesterday we were still children: who is murdered and how?

Adopted in the first episode of the series Anna Klettmann her eldest daughter Vivi (Julia Beautx) to school. The terrible news came a few hours later: Vivi’s mother was found stabbed to death in the kitchen. And the father of all people called the police and confessed to the crime.

Then, in flashbacks, we learn how Peter and Anna got together and why their marriage was ailing at the time of her death. With the policeman Tim (Julius Nitschkoff), who was traumatized as a child, another suspect pushed his way into the story, who has (had) a relationship with both Vivi and her mother.

Who is the killer in the ZDF series?

Nevertheless, in the end it comes out that husband and father Peter Klettmann is the murderer of his wife.

When Anna is chopping vegetables that morning in the kitchen, the two of them get into a discussion. While Peter believes that the family can now lead a normal life again, Anna is over. She wants a divorce. At that moment, Peter grabs the kitchen knife and stabs his wife in the back while an onion falls to the ground in slow motion. Which has no deeper meaning, but deserves a mention.

The ending explains: What was the motive for the crime?

Why did Peter kill his wife? There is no simple answer to this. However, as the series progresses, we learn several things about the lawyer that might give us a clue:

  • Right from the start, Anna was a kind of substitute solution for Peter, since he was actually in love with her friend Luisa.
  • Peter rebels against his tyrannical father (Ulrich Tukur), but for pragmatic reasons he follows in his footsteps anyway.
  • Ever since the prom night, he has been haunted by the guilt for the death of the Fiedler family, which someone else had to bear the brunt of.
  • Nevertheless, Peter has built up a picture-book life on the outside, as if he could use it to make everything that happened be forgotten.
  • During the last night he meets Tim, who introduces himself as his wife’s lover.
  • In addition, Peter has little insight into the mental life of his partner. This is excellently shown in the 6th episode, in which he confesses to her what happened after the prom. Peter unloads his complexes on her as if she were nothing more than a vessel for his forgiveness. The sex scene that follows shows how disturbed Anna is by the secret while Peter only uses her for his needs.

Why the “perfect birthday” ends in murder

So on the day of fact we have on one side a man, who is careful to keep up the appearances of his life. He only wanted one “perfect birthday” have for Anna, he repeats like a mantra. Anything else would confront him about how messed up he is.

On the other side is a womanwho doesn’t want to keep living in this lie. The affair with policeman Tim does not bring happiness to Anna, but it does make her realize that over the years she has given up her own wishes and dreams for someone else. And it’s not worth it. This also shows his ruthless decision to cancel the support of Dilara Miller (Mathilda Smidt) shortly before her graduation. This has nothing to do with a real purification.

Anna tells him to his face what he secretly fears: peter is fake, his meticulously constructed life is nothing more than a building of lies. With that she repeats what the young Dilara said to him shortly before. Both challenge the very core of Peter’s self-image as a good father and good husband (rightly so).

At that moment, Peter shows his true colors and murders the woman, deluding himself that she cannot leave him.
