In Arcane there is a villain who mainly acts in the background, but is still partly responsible for the worst events. This is Singed. The mad scientist has a huge influence on Zaun. But what is his motivation?
Spoiler alert: The following article discusses events from Arcane Season 1 and the official trailers for it. If you haven’t seen this yet, you shouldn’t read any further.
Who is Singed? Singed wasn’t among the first 20 champions in League of Legends, but he was, along with Zilean, the first “new” champion to expand the pool in 2009. His trademark is the large bottle of poisonous liquid that he carries on his back.
In Arcane Season 1 we get to know the scientist as the inventor of the Shimmer. Shimmer is a substance sold as a street drug by Silco in Zaun. Depending on the amount, it can grant the user inhuman powers such as strength or healing abilities.
Unlike Silco, Singed is not about power or money. His only focus is his research, which he wants to advance at all costs. But he has no empathy for people. He is okay with any sacrifice as long as his goal is achieved.

Singed, the mad scientist from Zaun
What was Singed before? Singed wasn’t always the disfigured scientist. He originally comes from Piltover. Thanks to his great intellect and his talent for natural sciences, he entered the university there at an early age. He was valued, at least until hextech technology came along.
The mix of magic and science didn’t suit Singed. He looked down on the people who worked with it. He preferred to throw himself into alchemy. However, his ignorance of Hextech technology caused him to be expelled from university and run out of resources.
To further his research, he moved to Zaun, where he quickly found work with his alchemy. There he worked for anyone who would pay him and advance his research. To escape human limits, he created a stimulant.
In his research, he doesn’t care about morals or ethics. He also experiments with living things and with mixing humans and aspects of animals. As we already know from the trailers, he is probably also responsible for the creation of Warwick.
Ultimately, he even teams up with Noxus and builds them a terrible chemical weapon that Noxus wants to use to conquer Ionia.
Singed in Arcane
What does Singed do in Arcane? In Arcane, he is responsible for the creation of Shimmer. It is also relevant for the development of Viktor. Even at a young age, he acted as a kind of mentor for the young scientist.
In Arcane’s past, Singed wasn’t always the ruthless scientist. He wanted to help Viktor and other people and even worked with Heimerdinger. But he is also responsible for how Jinx turned out. Singed injected her with chemicals to save her life. But this changed Jinx.
In the second season he is responsible for Warwick. It is still unknown whether the plot with Noxus will also be taken up in the series. But Ambessa Medarda is a Noxian warlord in Piltover. So a meeting between the two doesn’t seem impossible.
